Custom King: Team collective
Although it was a combined team effort, David Rita, Tom Prior and Michael Elm from Maidstone Harley-Davidson’s workshop led the way with their custom bike build of ‘Ottaway’ – creating a Harley-Davidson of yesteryear but with some cool modern touches to bring it into 2018 so that it’s completely based around not only Harley’s board and flat track legacy, but Maidstone’s very own too. ‘Ottaway’ also carries several subtle but sentimental homage’s in recognition of Harley’s 115th Anniversary.
The name of their build is a further nod to Harley’s ancestry. William ‘Bill’ Ottaway, one of the first engineers to be employed by the American brand as a speed tuner to develop their race engines.
‘Ottaway’ has heritage inspired features that brings this build back to the original board / flat track bikes of their time such as the XR 750 inspired intake / rear tail section and board track inspired bars / cables whilst keeping several new features like the modern day exhaust system (framed into a ‘V’ shape to highlight the V-Twin engine). As you can see, incorporating influences of yesteryear with today’s functionality can be achieved with careful planning and alignment of minds.
